Who is Chris Homer?

Chris Homer was born and raised in Shellharbour. He attended Shellharbour Primary School and Warilla High School, which was the first school in Australia to introduce surfing as a sport.

As a competitive and free surfer, Homer developed a deep appreciation for the local coastline and natural environment, leading to his involvement in the successful ‘Save Killalea’ environmental campaign.

Environmental Advocacy:

Chris Homer is the Deputy Chair of National Surfing Reserves and a Board Director of Surfrider Foundation Australia. He has been a Committee Member of the Save Killalea Alliance since 2006 and previously served as Deputy Chair of the Killalea State Park Trust.

Additionally, he has participated in the Flood Risk Management and Coastal Management Advisory Committees for Shellharbour City Council.

Finance Industry:

Homer works as a Mortgage Broker in the finance industry. He holds qualifications in Nutritional Medicine, Fitness and Recreation, and is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Election as Mayor:

Chris Homer was elected as Mayor of Shellharbour in a surprising election result, unseating the incumbent Marianne Saliba. His campaign benefited from grassroots efforts to stop development at the popular surfing reserve Killalea.

Despite having no prior political experience, he promised a “fresh wave of leadership” and a non-partisan, cooperative council approach.

Vision and Aspirations:

Homer's vision for Shellharbour involves progressive and proactive service delivery focused on public interest. He aims to foster a non-partisan, inclusive, and equitable culture across all Wards in the Shellharbour Local Government Area.

Climate & Sustainability Policy:

On 10 November 2022, Shellharbour City Council unanimously adopted its Climate & Sustainability Policy and Zero Emissions Shellharbour Strategy. These documents apply to all Council’s strategic and operational activities, embedding sustainability principles into all business decision-making.

Zero Emissions Shellharbour Strategy:

The strategy sets objectives for the Zero Emissions Shellharbour program and outlines a pathway to achieve emissions reduction targets. The Council has set three main targets, Net zero emissions for Council operations by 2035.

Council purchases 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025. Net zero community emissions by 2050.

Homer emphasized that the focus of the broader community transition to a net zero city by 2050 would involve engaging, empowering, and supporting residents, visitors, and local businesses. He advocates for a cross-sectoral approach involving all levels of government, businesses, and the community to prepare for a low-carbon future.
