John Connors serves as the current Mayor of Dungog Shire. An independent politician, Connors was re-elected unopposed in the election held on 4 December 2021.

His current term will expire on 14 September 2024. Connors has expressed his intention to seek re-election as both Mayor of Dungog Shire and as a Councillor for A Ward in the forthcoming elections in September.

Promotion of Literacy:

One of Connors' notable contributions to the community is the launch of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in Dungog Shire. This program is designed to encourage children from birth to five years old to develop a love for reading.

By providing free, age-appropriate books to children each month, the initiative aims to foster early childhood literacy and promote lifelong learning habits.

Community Engagement:

Councillor Connors places a strong emphasis on maintaining open communication with the residents of Dungog Shire. He regularly disseminates Mayoral messages, which include updates on Council activities, information about local events, and responses to community concerns.

Capital Works Funding:

Since Connors began his term as Mayor in March 2020, Dungog Shire has received an unprecedented amount of funding for capital works. This financial support has been crucial in advancing infrastructure projects and enhancing the overall quality of life in the shire.

Notably, the first year of the Council’s five-year special rate variation (SRV) approval saw $300,068 allocated to various projects, with some funds carrying over into the next financial year.

Celebration of Local Talent:

Connors has also demonstrated a commitment to celebrating local achievements. For example, he publicly congratulated Dungog native Spencer Turrin and the Australian Men’s Fours rowing team on their gold medal win at the Tokyo Olympics.

Infrastructure Development:

Under Connors' leadership, the Council has secured funding for significant infrastructure projects, including the construction of a new bridge at Clarence Town.
