Who is Kristie Johnston?

Kristie Johnston made history in May 2021 by becoming the first independent elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly in 25 years, representing the electorate of Clark. Her political journey includes serving as an Alderman from 2011, then as Mayor of Glenorchy starting in 2014, and securing re-election in January 2018.

Johnston, a qualified criminologist and lawyer, holds an Arts/Law degree with a focus on Public Policy and a Post-Graduate Master's degree in Criminology and Corrections. Her academic and professional endeavors have notably included research on transport and crime within the Glenorchy municipality.

Passionate about advocating for the interests of Clark and its residents, Johnston is committed to transparency, accountability, and integrity in politics. She is recognized for her readiness to challenge wrongdoing and defend the vulnerable in her community.

Outside of her political career, Johnston lives in Glenorchy with her partner, their children, and dogs. She owns and operates the Maypole Hotel in New Town and enjoys gardening and spending time with her family in any spare moments she finds.

As an independent member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly, Johnston is dedicated to placing the needs and voices of her constituents above political agendas, ensuring their interests are heard and addressed.
