Mary Fitzgibbon is from Caherslee, Tralee. Her parents are Seán Kelly from Balloonagh, Tralee, and Joan Mahony from Lackeen, Kenmare.
She is married to Michael Fitzgibbon from Derry City, and they live in Ballymacelligott with their five children, five hens, and one cat. Fitzgibbon is a full-time lecturer in the Department of Nursing & Health Care Sciences at the Institute of Technology, Tralee.
Born in 1969, Fitzgibbon grew up in Caherslee, Tralee, and attended St. John’s School Balloonagh, taught by the Sisters of Mercy and lay teachers.
After completing her Leaving Certificate in 1986, she spent a year in the US, graduating with a High School Diploma. Upon her return, she studied nursing, midwifery, and education at the University of Ulster at Coleraine and Queen’s University, Belfast.
Fitzgibbon began her nursing career in 1988 in Tralee and has spent the last 28 years in nursing, midwifery, and education. She worked as a Lecturer/Practitioner in Midwifery and Women’s Health at King’s College in London before returning to Tralee in 1998 to take up a post as Nurse Tutor.
In 2002, nurse education transferred to the Institute of Technology, Tralee, where she currently works.
Fitzgibbon is passionate about living life to the fullest and has been involved in various community activities. She has been a scout leader and has helped new mothers transition to motherhood through voluntary support groups.
Fitzgibbon has also assisted couples with infertility through NaproTechnology.
In response to the closure of Ireland’s Embassy to the Holy See in 2011, Fitzgibbon became a spokesperson for Ireland Stand Up, a lay initiative formed to reopen the embassy and stand up for Ireland’s Christian faith and heritage. She has been lobbying on behalf of the group for the past four years.
