Troy Thompson, born in Perth, Western Australia, is an independent politician and the current Mayor of Townsville, having been elected in the 2024 local Council elections. He succeeded Jenny Hill, who held the mayoral position from 2012 to 2024.
Thompson professes to be a man of the community, dedicated to serving the people of Townsville.
Thompson's family moved frequently due to his father's postings with the Australian Army. He attended Vincent Primary School in 1978, Kirwan Primary School from 1979 to 1983, and completed his education at Kirwan High School in 1988.
During his school years, he was active in sports, playing rugby league for Centrals ASA and cycling for Rising Sun Amateur Wheelers.
Thompson spent five years in Germany from 2011 to 2015, working as a Commercial Manager for the supply chain company Avetta, overseeing the EMEA region. He then returned to Brisbane in 2015 to assume the role of Global CEO.
Thompson also served as Chairman of the Aitkenvale Sporting Association, which is now known as Community ASA.
Thompson is a long-time resident of Townsville, where his mother Janet, brothers Adam, Jason, and their families continue to live. He is passionate about sports and is a fervent supporter of Queensland teams.
He enjoys spending time with his partner Michelle and his two children, Ashleigh and Jordan.
Thompson's successful campaign as an independent candidate in 2024 marked a significant shift in Townsville's local governance. He emphasizes his commitment to the community and aims to bring a fresh perspective to the mayoral office, building on his extensive experience in both local and international roles.
