John Kelly is a fifth-generation Tasmanian, born and raised in Hobart, with a deep-rooted connection to the local community, culture, and landscape. He has dedicated much of his life to serving his community through various roles, including in sporting clubs, the Army reserve, surf life saving, and on numerous committees and boards.

John has spent 35 years self-employed, with a passion for restoring and renovating some of Hobart's most iconic heritage buildings. His projects include the State Cinema, the Soundy Building in North Hobart, and the Crescent Hotel.
His current endeavor involves the complete renovation of The Hope and Anchor, Australia's oldest continuously licensed hotel, located on Hobart's historic waterfront. These projects have not only preserved important community landmarks but have also transformed them into thriving venues that serve both locals and tourists.
John is an elected Hobart City Councillor and serves on multiple boards and committees. Wellington Park Management Trust, Maritime Museum of Tasmania, Safe Water Hobart Association, Hobart Tram Restoration & Museum Society, North Hobart Traders Association, Footsteps Towards Freedom (a committee dedicated to commemorating female convicts through sculpture).
John's commitment to his community was honored when he was named Hobart's Citizen of the Year in 2016 for "outstanding service to the Hobart community." He has also served as a former Australian Army Reservist for 12 years and is actively involved in local sporting groups.
